Nobody Told Me I Was Building the Wrong Thing
Six weeks. 75% dead code. And the feedback loop that AI tools quietly removed.

I was poking around RetrospectAI, an Obsidian plugin I’d built for summarizing my journal entries, and I couldn’t remember what half the files did. (Already a bad sign.) So I asked. The agent cheerfully pointed me at an example script:

A build pipeline that compiles everything down to one file. You can’t shell out to ts-node and pretend the runtime is Node.
The example had never run.
It was theater.
The AI that wrote it had no way to know it didn’t work, because the AI doesn’t run anything. It writes things that look like they should run. And six weeks earlier, I had asked it to.
The plan was two days. This was June 2025.
A small plugin to help me resurface old writing and pull out some themes. Plain, boring, the middle of the road. I’d been pair-programming with Claude Code and Taskmaster — task manager scaffolds the spec, coding agent builds against it, I review, repeat. The loop felt productive. Green checkmarks. Files appearing. Tests passing.
Six weeks later, I had a sophisticated enterprise-grade AI orchestration platform that required its own documentation. Which required its own documentation.
(For the non-devs in the audience: this is NOT A GOOD THING BUT A VERY BAD THING.)
The plugin worked. It saved summaries to notes, the way I’d asked. It also shipped with an “insight prioritization engine,” a “theme similarity calculator,” and a “recommendation generation engine.”
Engines. Plural.
I never asked for any of this. I asked for things like “summarize this journal entry” and “save the summary to a note.” But I had also said the word “orchestrator” once, as a placeholder, the way you’d say “thingie” before you know what to call something. The task manager treated “orchestrator” as a spec. The coding agent interpreted that as a multi-model consensus engine with fallback routing. Each step made sense in isolation. None were checked against what I actually needed, because I didn’t have a precise goal, and I let “orchestrator” slide from placeholder to spec without noticing.
I wasn’t building a plugin. I was curating an exhibition of plausible-looking code.
From 2004 to 2007, I watched features die in rooms at Yahoo! File a ticket. Get an estimate. Defend it in sprint planning while someone from another team asked if it duplicated what they were already building. Watch it get deprioritized twice before a PM killed it in a quarterly review.
That friction was maddening. Features that should have shipped didn’t. But the friction did something I didn’t appreciate at the time: bad ideas left a trail. If a two-day project stretched to six weeks, someone noticed. Even badly, even late, even rudely — someone noticed.
I spent a couple of those years wanting out. Ship without the approval chain. With AI coding tools, I finally could.
Turns out the brake system was doing more than I gave it credit for.

Hand to God, it used the phrase “Speed-to-Awesome.” Capital S, capital A, hyphen, like it’s a metric you’d track in a dashboard.
It wasn’t wrong, exactly. The system worked. The fallbacks worked. The architecture was extensible.
What scared me was how good it felt to read. How the emojis and the formatting and the “you’re not just building X, you’re pioneering Y” cadence got past the part of my brain that would normally ask: wait, did I actually want any of this?
The model had followed my loosely defined terms into a maximalist build, then evaluated its own work using the language of startup pitch decks. And I almost accepted it, because I was overwhelmed by how little I knew about systems design, and it pattern-matched to what competence sounds like.
The real audit came later. I ran madge for the import graph and grepped every filename to see what referenced what. I drew dependency maps in my notes app like a divorce attorney building a case. The numbers:

I scrapped it.
Not refactored. Not rolled back. Walked away from six weeks and started over from scratch. The cost of continuing was higher than the cost of starting again. Every fix would have meant touching three other things I’d built the week before. The project had passed the point where simplifying it was more work than building it had been.
That felt awful. Six weeks isn’t nothing when you’re a solo consultant. The system worked. An AI had told me, in bullet points with emojis, that I was pioneering the future of development. And my actual future was a folder I’d stopped opening.

I don’t have a framework. I have two questions I force myself to answer now, before I keep building.
First: is the model both the builder and the judge? If you’re asking the system that wrote the code whether the code is good, you don’t have a feedback loop. You have a mirror. I keep at least one checkpoint outside the conversation now. A written-down “done looks like this.” A person who wasn’t in the room when the architecture got exciting.
Second: which words are doing placeholder duty? “Orchestrator.” “Intelligent layer.” “Smart routing.” These feel like specifications but they’re vibes. The model treats them as exact specs. If I can’t define a term in one sentence before I start building, I flag it. That’s where the drift starts.
These are the checks that sprint planning used to force, badly. The ones I spent years wanting to escape.
I’m a solo builder with decades of experience and I couldn’t stop the drift in time. I got six weeks deep before exhaustion did what discipline should have done on day three. If that can happen to me, think about what happens to a three-person nonprofit team with no technical lead and an AI that keeps saying yes.
The tooling won’t remind you. The model will reassure you that everything is on track. It’ll tell you you’re pioneering the future while it does it.

Thank you. I do worry about how many people are trying to use AI to make up for lack of coding skills. I'm guilty of that myself but my code needs are minimal and I get feedback (incomprehensible error message here) immediately.
