I recently bought/built my husband a new PC. I spent something like $3000, and the majority of it was a GPU (800-something) and the RAM (650, although now around 850, for 2 sticks of 32GB). The RAM is from Crucial, which rather dramatically is exiting the consumer market to cater to businesses (as your writing emphasizes). I believe the RAM was cheap(er) because there was some kind of boycott. As someone who doesn't build often and isn't into the self-build "scene," I did the financially lucrative thing and saved $2-$300 on the pariah RAM. The part list is here: PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H43VFP

It's not the most inexpensive build, and I'm sure we could have gotten him a larger, uglier Costco Super H4><0r Gaming Tower for less money with liquid cooling or some nonsense, but this is a lovely machine that fits on his desk and makes the things go.

Separately, the company I work for has never bought into AI or the cloud and we use our own hardware in data centers. We don't use credits/tokens with another company or contract it out. Our code never leaves our environment. We do have a passion project (read: time spent on it is unpaid) with some models on our fancy hardware, but it's not excessively useful. It's just enough to chat with and get some ideas about bugs, and that's enough for me. It's a big step up from my rubber duck (my "rubber duck" is a beanie baby cat, however).
